WORLD SCHOOLS GOLF CHALLENGE NEWSLETTER

World Schools
Golf Challenge

Newsletter November 2011

The World Schools Golf Challenge is a once in a life-time experience for high school golfers, their coaches, teachers, families and supporters.

What is the World Schools Golf Challenge?

The objectives of the Challenge are:

To encourage participation and development of golf within high schools and the educational system.

To assist promising high school golfers to continue to develop their skills on new courses and in friendly competition with players from the golfing world.

To provide a solid base for young golfers to plan their golfing future.

To provide educational opportunities and experiences for students with an interest in golf.

To promote the enjoyment and qualities of golf as a recreational alternative for students regardless of their golfing abilities.

Schools are invited to send teams to the World Schools Golf Challenge to experience the sporting, cultural and educational experiences that the region and the tournament have to offer.

A Long Distance Entry

We are delighted to announce that Walvis Baai High School and Pro-Ed Akadamie have entered a team.

Q: Where’s Walvis Bay?
A: Namibia

Approximately 11,600 km from Melbourne. Now that’s a long drive. . . .

Walvis Baii Private School and the Pro-Ed Akadamie attended the Stellenbosch, World Schools Golf Challenge in April this year. To have them make the effort to travel half way around the world to play in Mornington is very gratifying.

I hope players taking part in Mornington make the effort to find out some more about this fascinating country when they meet our guests from Namibia.

We also hope that they take the chance to engage with their fellow competitors -apart from the golf it’s what World Schools Golf is all about!

Other Entries

The most recent schools to register are Auckland Grammar (3 teams) and Waitaki Boys.

Waitaki have 5 players so they successfully approached other schools to see if they could find some players to make up a combined school.

We encourage all schools to consider this as a possibility. If you don’t have 4 golfers in your school check with your neighbouring schools – don’t forget the World Schools Golf Challenge is about inclusion and participation.

As organisers we will bend over backwards to give every young golfer the chance to participate and have a golf experience they will never forget.

Why Enter the World Schools Golf Challenge?

The World Schools Golf Challenge has been established for several reasons.

Included in these reasons are:
  • The aim to help further the incorporation of school in to school PE curriculums
  • Give young golfers their first taste of a 4 round competition
  • Provide the opportunity for interaction between schools who might never have otherwise encountered. The 6 years of WSGC have shown this to be one of the outstanding achievements of the event.

World Schools Golf Challenge - St Andrew Beach Golf Course

Located in ‘The Cups’ region of the Mornington Peninsula and metres from the thundering surf of Gunnamatta Beach, St Andrews Beach Golf Course originally opened in 2006 and in that year debuted as the 9th best course in Australia.

It is built on a stunning piece of land that lends itself perfectly to the tradition of the famous links courses of Britain and Ireland and can be compared favourably to the courses in Melbourne’s famous sandbelt region.

Internationally renowned golf course architect, Tom Doak is the designer of the classic 18 hole links style course and his aim was to create on of the best golf courses in the world.

Adam Scott

By the time you read this our Ambassador, Adam Scott, will have played for the International Team against the United States for the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

With the form shown by several of the Presidents Cup participants from both teams in the Australian Open I will be very surprised if the viewing hasn’t been utterly compelling.

Let’s hope Adams resurgence into the upper echelons of World golf has continued during this stellar event.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours in Sport,

The World Schools Golf Challenge Team
