Sacred Heart College has 2 teams registered – we asked the team organiser Brother Murray Kelly to tell us more about the college and the teams.
Sacred Heart College is a Catholic Marist boys secondary school situated in the suburb of Glendowie, Auckland, New Zealand. The college has 1000 pupils, including 160 Boarders. It is situated on 26 hectares of park-like grounds, so that there are extensive playing fields. Nearly every student in the school is involved in a sport of some kind. Most of the boys are in team sports, but golf is also very popular, and in summer, many of the students make use of the fields to practice their golf.
While many students play golf, and have a handicap, there are only a few who have a single figure handicap. In summer, while the fields are used extensively for cricket, softball, touch rugby etc, there is a part of the field that is used, where about 20 students who are not involved in a summer team sports, are taught the fundamentals of the golf swing.
Each year SHC has entered a team in the Auckland Secondary Schools Golf Championships, and more recently our students have been invited to play in the Catholic Caring Foundation Golf Tournament. The college entry of 2 teams into the World Schools Golf Challenge next year is a very exciting prospect.
The team is to be managed by Mr. Heine Kohlhase (Director of Junior Golf at the Howick G.C). The liaison teacher for the team is Brother Murray Kelly (RNZAF G.C). The team members are: Cameron Davis, Nick Smit, Blair Wheeler, James Stembridge, Daniel Whittaker, - all members of the Remuera G.C; and Shaun Kohlhase, Alex McKay, Alex Ubels – all members of the Howick G.C.’
Visit the SHC website – www.sacredheart.school.nz
The tournament is a four-round stroke play event with team and individual gross and nett competitions. The 4 student teams can be boys, girls or mixed who must be aged
from 13 to 19.
Organisers expect to attract at least 80 teams from high schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Asia, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as from throughout Australia.
There are no qualifications required beyond being a member of a school team, having a recognised golf handicap, a love of the game of golf and a desire to meet other college golfers from around the world and to experience all that Australia (and South Australia in particular) has to offer.
The beauty of the tournament is that entry is not limited to one school per country – any school can participate and there is no limit to the number of teams that a single school can enter.

Four of the most popular clubs in Adelaide will host the 2009 WSGC practise and tournament rounds. In past newsletters we have visited 3 of them – now it’s time to visit the City of Adelaide Golf Links.
Four rounds of the World Schools Golf Challenge will be played on the South Course of the City of Adelaide Golf Links. Set in the Adelaide parklands golfers are presented with stunning views of the Adelaide CBD (less than 2km away), with the Adelaide hills as a backdrop, from several vantage points around the course. Well established gums and other native trees are interspersed with the occasional massive Moreton Bay Fig to provide a test for the wayward golfer.
Anywhere else in the world this location would be hidden away as an exclusive private golf club but in Adelaide it’s a public course and said to be one of the most magnificent golfing settings in Australia. Home to the annual Lord Mayor’s Golf Trophy, the course has also hosted PGA pro am tour events.
At almost 6000 metres the high quality greens and sculptured fairways are tailored towards the more experienced golfer who enjoys a challenge. It is Par 71 and 5880m in length.

The Adelaide Shores Holiday Village will be the nerve centre of the tournament and organisers hope that as many teams as possible will stay at this unique property. Not only does it offer well-priced self-catering accommodation and leisure facilities but both tournament social functions will be hosted at the Adelaide Shores Function Centre.
The Village is located right on the beach at West Beach in a 125-hectare Coastal Recreation Reserve – about 15 minutes from the centre of Adelaide. It offers excellent self-contained accommodation including 2 & 3 bedroom deluxe bungalows and 2-bedroom villas and a bunkhouse – ideal for school golf teams. Both styles of accommodation have spacious living areas and fully equipped kitchens.
Visit the tournament website www.worldschoolsgolf.com for details about the various accommodation options available. Please note that prices quoted on the website for bungalows and villas are based on full occupancy of these facilities. If there is less than full occupancy prices will need to be adjusted accordingly.
