ANNOUNCEMENT

Following many months of discussions with prospective host cities the organisers of the 2009 World Schools Golf Challenge were recently very pleased to announce that the tournament would be staged in Adelaide, South Australia. Read the formal press release announcing the details >>>

WHAT MAKES SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND ADELAIDE THE PERFECT VENUE FOR THE 2009 WORLD SCHOOLS GOLF CHALLENGE?

South Australia has an international reputation as a centre of golfing excellence so its not by chance that it was selected to host this unique tournament. The fairways of South Australia are as diverse as the landscapes of the state itself.

South Australia is often described as Australia’s best kept secret; South Australia blends charming European style villages, stunning white sandy beaches, awe-inspiring National Parks with an abundance of wildlife, the might of the Murray River and some of the world’s best food and wine to create a holiday venue full of adventure, relaxation and indulgence.

And the greatest thing …it’s so easy to get around! In a 7 to 10 day holiday you can easily sample the delights of some of the worlds most famous wine regions (the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Clare are all just over an hours drive from Adelaide), cruise at leisure along the Murray River, shop til you drop in Rundle Mall, take in a close encounter with the wildlife of Kangaroo Island and even experience the rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges.

The generosity of Adelaide’s friendly locals is most evident when the city turns out to welcome visiting event participants.
Each year the sportsmen and women of all abilities from all over the world are made to feel right at home in Adelaide, where people go out of their way to make sure visitors are looked after. International racing drivers, cyclists, tennis players, golfers (amateurs and professional) and soccer players are all warmly welcomed by South Australians. Adelaide certainly knows how to embrace sport and sporting competitors, turning a race or event into a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone involved. Adelaide’s friendliness finds expression in other ways too.
It is inherent in the city’s safety, cleanliness, convenience and comfort. Visitors can enjoy family-friendly parks, safe swimming beaches and a relaxed way of living made possible by a mild Mediterranean climate.

:pics for web:wsgcd170.jpgWHAT IS THE WORLD SCHOOLS GOLF CHALLENGE?

The tournament is a four-round stroke play event with team and individual gross and nett competitions. The 4 student teams can be boys, girls or mixed who must be aged from 13 to 19.

Organisers expect to attract at least 80 teams from secondary schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Asia, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as from throughout Australia.

:pics for web:wsgcd4141.jpgThe organisers’ policy is one of inclusion – there are no qualifications required beyond being a member of a school team, having a recognised golf handicap, a love of the game of golf and a desire to meet other college golfers from around the world and to experience all that Australia (and South Australia in particular) has to offer.

The tournament is unique because there is no other international schools team event with an individual element for middle to higher handicap golfers.

The beauty of the tournament is that entry is not limited to one school per country – any school can participate and there is no limit to the number of teams that a single school can enter.

Comfort with local conditions seemed to be the difference in the inaugural World Schools Golf Challenge played in Christchurch, New Zealand in April, 2007.

Co-sponsored by the Christchurch City Council and the PGA – International Golf Academy (Queensland), 54 teams from high schools in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand contested the 72 hole event played at the Harewood, Waitikiri, Templeton and Coringa Golf Clubs.

Como Secondary College (Western Australia) were one of many schools who embraced the concept of multiple team entries to the extent that they sent 7 teams from their Perth Golf Academy – 4 boys, 1 girls and 2 mixed teams.
